Visual Arts / Video Installation

The visual artist and Professor Emeritus at the Fine Arts School is opening his solo exhibition titled, ‘Attention Works Ahead’, curated by art historian Emmanouil Mavrommatis, Professor Emeritus AUTh.

Manolis Babousis exhibits a composite installation of a 4×9 metre Totem accompanied by 9 video projections of photographs and texts. The surface of human skin is pulled back like a theatre curtain, which accurately reveals the anatomy of the human body, while his texts poetically juxtapose the counterpoints and interactions between life and art. At the same time, he presents 6 video projections with sound as a flux of the image of the world.

In the most dominant mythological version, Europa fertilises the cultural pre-Hellenic era of the Minoan Kingdom. Plato in ‘Phaedo’ refers to the well-known world of his era as neither large, nor small. It is the geographic region that extends from the Pillars of Hercules to the Rioni River, the absolute limit to the east.
Our recent experience of Europe as a City/Continent that is searching for a collective identity, through multiple experimentations, in a framework that supports Schuman’s basic declarations regarding equality and true solidarity between the member-states of an enlarged family.
The awkwardness of present-day Europeans in dealing with ideological fluidity in every important sector of cultural development dictates expectations in order to create internal cohesion, while the artistic community itself activates systems of thought, making use of timeless symbols. Inventions, even paradoxes, decisively incorporate randomness into the visual adventure , as a catalyst of the creative process and act.

Participants:
Arbit City Group (Manolis Daskalakis-Lemos, Dimitra Dimopoulou, Krini Dimopoulou, Natasa Efstathiadi, Giannis Mouravas), Dimitris Dimitriadis, Nandia Kalara, PieTa Group (Eleftheria Stoikou-Venetia Koutsou), Christina Sarantopoulou, Alexis Fidetzis.

He has been characterised as one of the most influential people of the visual arts from 1950 onwards; however, he has not been duly recognised in Greece, in contrast to the recognition he receives abroad.
His significant contribution to international art can be briefly summarised by the number of galleries he founded, his promotion of artists all over the world, the unstoppable momentum of his activities, his crucial role in the establishment of the European Surrealists in America, as well as that of many other young artists. A close friend of his until the very end, Andy Warhol, was discovered by Iolas.

Thirty years after his death, the exhibition-tribute to Alexander Iolas, the largest that has been organised to date in honour of this patron of the arts, is being held at the ideal time and in the ideal place: in Thessaloniki. This is where traces of his benefaction survive through his contribution to the foundation of the first centre for contemporary art in Greece, which then evolved into the first museum of contemporary art, the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art.

“Works of abstractive painting create reductions without strict cultural formations, creating images in fluidity and gradually cancelling the rationalised perspective. Thus, “episodes” of spiritual awakening occur, which are caused by an exceptionally nuclear, even primitive, calling. Incomprehensible whispers “invoking the gods” (Thucydides, History 7.71.3) transform into phonetic images, which are produced using colours with painting as a base, delivering art to untamed fingers, like erratic writing. A type of painting similar to addressing the divine, which resides deep inside, in an eternal effort to calm the inner restlessness, so as to provide an extension to moments of peace, as space expands into the endless, the incomplete. However, gradually, as though due to some need, the fullness of time arrives for images to take on dimensions. So the unformed is recalled for the sake of normalcy and structures are produced, either from the relationship of points, or because of the way in which they are juxtaposed. This new way is defined by principles and the person applying them becomes a constructor, a mason, and a creator.

Giorgos Tougias, in the 60s, created works that produce a unique and essential personal idiom of abstraction, the result of an inner expression, in the shape of the shape of an open invocation. Tougias then recalled this artistic practice, deciding to design his painting world according to architectural terms, critically and with a delicate irony. The works produced are strictly geometrical. They have clear outlines and their straight and narrow paths describe exactly the design event of absolute tranquility and stillness. In the 70s, during a period of intense experimentation regarding the relationship of the artist and his media, Tougias left behind the canvas, which meant “designing” the work directly in three-dimensional space.

Giorgos Tougias was without a doubt a pioneer, fully comprehending abstraction as a process of recalling and he remained a pioneer, as by recalling his artistic practices he served creation and not the avant-garde”. Nikos Mykoniatis, September 2018

European Artists, each representing their country, take a look at Europe today from their own perspective.
A continent with enormous contrasts, unexpected dark sides, many different conflicts that have tried it over recent years, which, however, has not ceased to search for its new face, through the values, treasured principles, and historic memories that connect its people.
What could be more appropriate than art, with its own sensitive markers, to present the multiformity and the scope of European ideals in all its nuances? And what city could be more appropriate than Thessaloniki, with its rich historical, multicultural, and religious background to host such an exhibition?
All the countries of the European Union will be represented by one or two visual artists, in this Greek-Austrian project being held under the auspices of the Austrian Embassy to Athens.

One of the most important sculptors of the younger generation in post-war Greece, internationally recognised with a rich catalogue of work, Kyriakos Cabadakis is among the most prolific artists in Greece, with compositions that adorn outdoor spaces, and public and private collections, in Greece and abroad.
The exhibition will include famous and unknown works from all of the artist’s periods, as well as the sculptor’s workshop. An art workshop will find a hospitable home in the former Workshops of the Arts and Crafts School. Sculpting wood and casting metals, at some point in the past, in the same space, the boarders of the School learned a craft. Sculpting wood and casting metals, Cabadakis, in his workshop, created Art. The moulds, the dies, and the tools of the School will coexist both with the corresponding early creations of the artist, as well as with his completed pieces. An exhibition that initiates you to the materials, before their final form, the process, before the result, the quest and the destination of a piece of art.

Kyriakos Cabadakis (1938-2003) was born in Drama and raised in Thessaloniki. He studied sculpting and engraving at the Fine Arts School at the State Museum of Contemporary Art in Berlin, where he lived and worked for fourteen years. In 1975 he relocated to Thessaloniki permanently. Influenced by German expressionism, he created sculptures, engravings, and woodcuts, which he presented at a number of solo and group exhibitions.
The human form was a dominant theme in his work, while his attempt to create visual-painting impressions was evident. In his last works, the form is somewhat lighter and characterised by a significant reduction in mass, in order to develop new relationships between the piece and the surrounding space.
In the context of the exhibition a specially designed educational programme will operate for pupils. Communication: 2310.206.910 or 2310.213.800. Head of Education: Areti Kondylidou
