BY THE EXPERIMENTAL STAGE OF THE NATIONAL THEATRE
The most translated German play of recent years – based on Joseph Conrad’s ‘Heart of Darkness’ and Coppola’s ‘Apocalypse Now’ – explores how Europeans perceive foreigners, criticises economic-military expansionism and combines existential angst with parody.
Awarded Best German Language play of 2015 by Theater Heure magazine and the Nestroy award committee, ‘The Ridiculous Darkness’ puts two soldiers on a dangerous mission in the rainforests of Afghanistan. With them are two Somali pirates, an Italian UN peacekeeper, a Serbian native, a quirky pastor, a parrot that delivers the news, a mysterious lieutenant colonel who defected to the jungle, and a desperate radio playwright. An alternative version of the timeless, “The horror! The horror!”, a fresh directorial look, a new generation of acting talent in the crucial interpretive field of political farce.
