The Human Voice

A monologue about betrayed love and loneliness. After forty years of friendship with Jean Cocteau, in 1958 Francis Poulenc composed the one-act “lyrical tragedy” based on the monologue by the same name that the author penned in 1928. The motivation for both artists was the end of a painful intimate relationship.

Jean Cocteau’s one-act play and Francis Poulenc’s opera are presented in a collaboration by the National Theatre of Northern Greece and the Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra; for the first time, both bodies will have the opportunity to adapt the same work at the same time, each in their own way.

The first part will include the theatrical version of the piece, with Maria Chatziioannidou delivering Cocteau’s monologue and directed by Giorgos Kafkas; in the second part, with the orchestra on stage, the composition of the same title by Poulenc, will be performed by soprano Electra Platiopoulou and the orchestra conducted by Philippe Forget.
