Exhibition of costumes titled 'Moments of creation in time, 55 years of the National Theatre of Northern Greece'

In the framework of this year’s Dimitria the National Theatre of Northern Greece is opening up its costume collection to remind us all of important moments from its 55 years of operation. The border between our internal and external worlds, an undisputed form of communication, the costume in theatre plays its own role depending on the performance, the scene, the hero, and the feelings that are searching for a way out.

The costumes in the exhibition were designed by major costume designers that have worked with the NTNG, and creations from emblematic performances – such as Shakespeare’s ‘Othello’ directed by Socrates Karantinos (1964), John Ford’s ‘Tis Pity She’s a Whore’ directed by Yannis Houvardas (1984) and Euripides’ ‘Bacchae’ directed by Nikos Charalambous (1991) – held by Greece’s second state theatre. Impressive costumes made from luxurious materials, as well as pioneering creations made from unexpected and imaginative raw materials, are here once again to underline the importance of… “appearances”. The NTNG is trying to bring its hidden treasures into the light, to promote its past, in the present. This exhibition is about cultural timelessness.

Specifically, the exhibition includes costumes designed by costume designers Giorgos Anemogiannis, George Vakalo, Spyros Vassiliou, Apostolos Vettas, Lisa Zaimi, Damian Zarifis, Giannis Kyrou, Giorgos Ziakas, Kenny McLellan, Yannis Metzikof, Dimitris Mytaras, Agni Doutsi, Elli Papageorgakopoulou, Giorgos Patsas, Nikos Sachinis, Vassilis Fotopoulos, Dionysis Fotopoulos, Savvas Charatsidis, Lalula Chrysikopoulou, Laloula Chrysikopoulou, and others.

The exhibition was planned and curated by set and costume designer Ioulia Stavridou.
