He has been characterised as one of the most influential people of the visual arts from 1950 onwards; however, he has not been duly recognised in Greece, in contrast to the recognition he receives abroad.
His significant contribution to international art can be briefly summarised by the number of galleries he founded, his promotion of artists all over the world, the unstoppable momentum of his activities, his crucial role in the establishment of the European Surrealists in America, as well as that of many other young artists. A close friend of his until the very end, Andy Warhol, was discovered by Iolas.
Thirty years after his death, the exhibition-tribute to Alexander Iolas, the largest that has been organised to date in honour of this patron of the arts, is being held at the ideal time and in the ideal place: in Thessaloniki. This is where traces of his benefaction survive through his contribution to the foundation of the first centre for contemporary art in Greece, which then evolved into the first museum of contemporary art, the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art.
