California, circa 1950. Surfers are no longer content to stick to the waves, they want to serf the streets as well. This is more or less how skateboarding was born, gradually attracting millions of fans around the world. Come and see how this popular hobby can turn from being a “vehicle” for activities, sports and transportation, into a… canvas for inspiration and creativity at ‘7Ply project 2016’.

‘7Ply project 2016’, organised for an 11th consecutive year by Propaganda Rollin co., includes a group exhibition with international participations, workshops, screenings and lots of… skateboards. This is a modern urban culture festival, a celebration of youth, a platform for artists and street art and music fans to meet, a chance to discuss and exchange ideas and skateboarding tricks.

The focal point of this year’s event is the group exhibition organised at the CACT. More than 100 artists from all over the world will present their creations on the seven layers of ply that make up a board (which is where ‘7Ply project’ got its name). The guest of honour this year is visual artist and professor at the Superior National School of Art in Limoges, Marios Teriade Eleftheriadis, who will exhibit a series of his own pieces on surfboards, from the El Pecado Salva series, which is the precursor to skateboarding. He will present an installation of his own transformed skateboards in “dialogue” amongst themselves.

This year’s guests include curator and doctor at the University of Arts in Belgrade Olivera Eric, who will participate in the exhibition and hold a speech on the connection between skateboards and avant-garde art (8/10, 15:30)

It should also be noted that ‘7Ply project’ guests include Israeli Guy Pitchon from the Tel Aviv skateboarding scene, who is a multidisciplinary artist focused on street photography, graphic arts, and tattoos. Pitchon will participate in the exhibition and hold a training workshop on street art (9/10, 13:00).

This year’s ‘7Ply project’ also includes a varied programme with skateboarding workshops, graffiti performances, skateboard contests and screenings, at the Contemporary Art Centre of Thessaloniki (www.cact.gr), Cocktail Bar, WE culture and sports facility and ‘Art House’ Gallery Bar (for more information please visit www.7plyproject.eu).
